One Crazy Summer (released in theaters on August 8, 1986) bursts onto the screen as an absurdly inventive, delightfully anarchic teen comedy that captures the breezy, offbeat spirit of mid-1980s youth cinema. Written and directed with trademark surreal humor by Savage Steve Holland, the story follows Hoops McCann (John Cusack), an aspiring teenage cartoonist who dreams of getting accepted into a prestigious art school by writing a love story.

Heading to Nantucket for summer vacation alongside his energetic buddy George (Joel Murray), Hoops gives a ride to Cassandra Eldridge (Demi Moore), a talented singer-songwriter trying to save her family’s beloved property from foreclosure.

Upon arriving on the island, Hoops and Cassandra join forces with an eccentric ragtag gang of local misfits, including the explosive, Godzilla-suit-wearing Egg Stork (Bobcat Goldthwait), and his brother Clay (Tom Villard).

Together, the group uncovers a sinister plot by greedy local developer Aguilla Beckerstead (Mark Metcalf) to seize Cassandra’s home and replace it with a luxury resort.

Supported by Aguilla’s snotty son Teddy Jr. (Matt Mulhern) and his snobbish girlfriend Cookie Campbell (Kimberly Foster), the villains challenge the underdogs at every turn.

To stop the demolition and pay off the mortgage, Hoops and his crew enter the high-stakes annual Nantucket regatta boat race, using sheer ingenuity, bizarre visual gags, and team spirit to defeat their wealthy rivals and secure a triumphant victory.

Curtis Armstrong, Joe Flaherty, William Hickey, Billie Bird, Rich Little, Rich Hall, Taylor Negron and John Matuszak round out the supporting cast.

Legacy

One Crazy Summer‘s legacy endures as a defining cult classic of the 1980s comedy boom, celebrated for its unique blend of live-action slapstick and animated cartoon sequences.
