Love Letters (released in theaters on April 27, 1984) unfolds on screen as a provocative, emotionally charged romantic drama that delves into the dangerous obsession and secret double lives fueled by hidden passion. Written and directed with intimate intensity by Amy Holden Jones, the narrative centers on Anna Winter (Jamie Lee Curtis), a young public radio DJ grieving the sudden death of her mother, Anna Sr. (Bonnie Bartlett).

While clearing out her mother’s belongings alongside her grieving father (Matt Clark), Anna uncovers a hidden stash of passionate love letters revealing a secret, decades-long extramarital affair her mother conducted with a mysterious lover.

Fascinated and profoundly altered by the discovery of her mother’s secret passion, Anna finds herself drawn down a strikingly similar emotional path.

She meets Oliver (James Keach), a charming, married photographer, and the two quickly ignite a fiery, illicit romance.

Though her close friend Wendy (Amy Madigan) warns her of the inevitable emotional wreckage, Anna becomes hopelessly consumed by the affair and attempts to navigate the turbulent waters of infidelity.

However, as her desire to fully possess Oliver deepens, she discovers that living out her mother’s tragic romantic fantasy forces her to confront the painful reality of being the other woman.

Sally Kirkland, Lyman Ward and Bud Cort round out the supporting cast.
