Mr. Wonderful (released in theaters on October 15, 1993) follows Gus (Matt Dillon), a working-class Electric Company worker in Brooklyn who dreams of purchasing a dilapidated local bowling alley with his blue-collar buddies. His ambitious business venture hits a major roadblock when he realizes his financially suffocating alimony payments to his ex-wife, Eleanor (Annabella Sciorra), prevent him from securing the necessary bank loan.

Realizing that his legal obligation to pay alimony ends if Eleanor remarries, Gus hatches a pragmatic scheme to find her a suitable new husband.

Despite being happily involved with a sweet, supportive nurse named Rita (Mary-Louise Parker), Gus actively plays matchmaker for his ex, setting Eleanor up on dates including Dominic (Vincent D’Onofrio), while balancing the camaraderie and banter of his eccentric circle of friends and coworkers Harvey (Dan Hedaya), Dante (Bruce Kirby), Juice (Luis Guzmán), and Mike (James Gandolfini).

The plot grows increasingly complicated when Eleanor begins dating Tom (William Hurt), a gentle, intellectual college professor who seems like the absolute ideal bachelor on paper.

As Tom and Eleanor’s courtship blossoms, Gus finds himself spending more time around his ex-wife to monitor their progress and offer romantic advice.

However, this constant proximity unexpectedly reignites dormant feelings and old domestic intimacy between the former spouses.

As Eleanor prepares to take a major step forward with Tom, Gus is forced to re-examine his true motivations, confronting his lingering affection for Eleanor and making a difficult decision about whether to let go of the past or fight for a second chance at love with the woman he never truly stopped loving.

Director Anthony Minghella brings a remarkably sensitive, European visual sensibility to this slice-of-life New York romantic comedy, elevating the standard studio tropes with rich character work and grounded atmospheric detail.

Dillon gives a charming, vulnerable performance as the blue-collar lead, balancing working-class grit with tender emotional confusion.

Sciorra turns in a deeply expressive performance as a woman reclaiming her independence, while Parker brings genuine heart to a potentially thankless role.

Hurt offers a wonderfully subtle, understated performance as the cultured suitor, and the vibrant supporting cast adds immense local color and humor.
