The Associate (released in theaters on October 25, 1996) delivers a sharp, witty, and satisfying satire of corporate misogyny, glass ceilings, and the absurd lengths a brilliant woman must go to receive fair recognition on Wall Street. The story centers on Laurel Ayres (Whoopi Goldberg), a fiercely intelligent, hard-working financial analyst in New York City who consistently outperforms her peers.
Despite her genius for picking stocks and structuring major corporate deals, Laurel is passed over for promotion in favor of Frank (Tim Daly), an arrogant, mediocre male colleague who steals her ideas and presents them as his own.
Fed up with the pervasive good ol’ boys’ network, Laurel quits the firm to launch her own independent financial advisory business, taking along her sharp, deeply capable secretary Sally Dugan (Dianne Wiest).
When prospective clients refuse to take a solo female executive seriously, Laurel invents a fictitious, legendary male business partner named Robert S. Cutty.
Using her own strategic financial genius under Cutty’s name, Laurel turns her nascent firm into an overnight Wall Street sensation, attracting high-profile clients like conservative tycoon Donald Fallon (Eli Wallach).
As demand to meet the reclusive financial titan escalates, Laurel relies on clever excuses, elaborate disguises, and heavy prosthetic makeup to bring Cutty to life in public settings.
The deception grows increasingly complex with the arrival of smart SEC auditor Camille Scott (Bebe Neuwirth) and a desperate Frank, who tries to uncover Cutty’s identity to save his own failing career.
Supported by quirky allies like a flamboyant associate played by Austin Pendleton and a loyal friend played by Lainie Kazan, Laurel navigates escalating media frenzies and high-stakes boardrooms, ultimately orchestrating a brilliant public unmasking that exposes Wall Street’s absurd gender bias once and for all.
Željko Ivanek, Jerry Hardin, Colleen Camp, and Allison Janney round out the supporting cast.
Cameos include former PGA Tour golfer Johnny Miller, Sally Jessy Raphael and Donald Trump.
