The Shadow (released in theaters on July 1, 1994) transports audiences to a dazzling, art deco-infused 1930s New York City, delivering a thrilling revival of one of pop culture’s most iconic radio and pulp heroes. Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the story follows Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), a former warlord who sought redemption in Tibet under the guidance of a mysterious mystic.

Granted the uncanny ability to cloud men’s minds and render himself invisible to all except his shadow, Cranston returns to Manhattan to fight crime under a mysterious masked alter ego.

Operating from the shadows, he commands a vast network of rescued operatives, including his loyal driver Moe Shrevnitz (Peter Boyle).

Cranston’s double life becomes dangerously complicated when he meets Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller), a brilliant telepathic socialite whose father, Dr. Reinhardt Lane (Ian McKellen), is a scientist working on a revolutionary energy source.

Chaos erupts across the city with the arrival of Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last living descendant of Genghis Khan.

Possessing hypnotic abilities equal to Cranston’s, Khan aims to conquer the world using an atomic weapon built from Dr. Lane’s research.

Aiding Khan’s villainous ambition is Farley Claymore (Tim Curry), a treacherous and greedy scientist bent on selling out humanity.

With additional support from police commissioner Wainwright Barth (Jonathan Winters) and detective Duke Rollins (John Kapelos), Cranston must confront his own inner dark impulses while racing against time to prevent Khan from obliterating New York City.

Baldwin commands the screen with smooth, theatrical charisma, effortlessly channeling both the suave playboy Cranston and the terrifying vigilante hero.

Mulcahy brings a distinct music-video kinetic style to the direction, elevating the narrative through striking visual effects, sweeping crane shots, and Jerry Goldsmith’s sweeping, magnificent score.
