Hot Pursuit (released in theaters on May 8, 1987) follows the chaotic journey of Dan Bartlett (John Cusack), a diligent but high-strung prep school student who misses out on a tropical vacation with his girlfriend, Lori (Wendy Gazelle), because he fails a chemistry final.
Desperate to reunite with her and her wealthy family on their private Caribbean island, Dan convinces his professor to let him retake the test, passes, and embarks on a solo mission to catch up.
However, what should be a simple flight becomes a comedic nightmare of missed connections and escalating danger. Dan finds himself stranded in Mexico, navigating a series of increasingly bizarre and perilous encounters with colorful characters and local authorities.
The plot thickens as Dan realizes that Lori’s family – led by her stern father, Mac (Monte Markham) – is actually being pursued by a group of modern-day pirates.
To reach them, Dan must team up with a grizzled old sailor named Mac (Robert Loggia), who provides the muscle and navigation skills Dan sorely lacks.
Along the way, the film features early career appearances by Ben Stiller as a shifty character Dan encounters and Jerry Stiller in a humorous role, marking a rare father-son appearance in the same project.
Keith David also appears as a formidable adversary, adding a layer of genuine threat to the lighthearted slapstick.
As Dan transforms from a sheltered student into a resourceful survivalist, the film culminates in a high-stakes rescue mission on the high seas.

Legacy
The legacy of Hot Pursuit is its position as a cult favorite that perfectly encapsulates the “teenager in over his head” trope that Cusack mastered in the late 1980s. While often overshadowed by his more iconic roles in Say Anything… or Better Off Dead, it remains a vital piece of his filmography that showcases his unique brand of panicked, fast-talking charm.
The movie is also remembered as a significant milestone for the Stiller family, offering a glimpse into the comedic chemistry that would later dominate Hollywood.
It stands as a prime example of the 80s “vacation-gone-wrong” subgenre, blending romantic comedy with genuine adventure and a breezy, tropical aesthetic.
By refusing to take itself too seriously while maintaining a frantic pace, Hot Pursuit has endured as a nostalgic reminder of a time when a simple missed flight could lead to an international odyssey of self-discovery and heroism.
