The Thursday Murder Club, directed by Chris Columbus, brings a fresh and delightful approach to the whodunit genre. The story centers on a quartet of friends residing in a peaceful retirement community, Coopers Chase.

But these aren’t your typical retirees; they are a formidable team of armchair detectives who meet weekly to discuss and solve unsolved cold cases. The group includes Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), a former secret agent with a cunning mind; Joyce (Celia Imrie), a former nurse with an unassuming charm; Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley), a retired psychiatrist with a meticulous eye for detail; and Ron (Pierce Brosnan), a former union leader with a hot temper.

Their world of theoretical crime-solving is turned upside down when a real murder occurs right on their doorstep.

The plot sees the four friends spring into action, using their diverse skills and contacts to outwit both the police and the killer.

The film’s narrative is a clever blend of sharp dialogue, humor, and genuine suspense. It subverts expectations by placing its most formidable sleuths in a setting often dismissed as mundane.

Mirren’s portrayal of the shrewd Elizabeth is a masterclass in subtlety and command, while Kingsley and Brosnan bring a surprising depth and comedic timing to their roles. Their chemistry as a team is a key strength of the film, making their interactions a joy to watch.

Jonathan Pryce, Richard E. Grant and Ingrid Oliver round out the cast.

The film was based on the international bestselling novel by Richard Osman.
