The Wild Geese (released on September 17, 1978) marches onto the screen as a gritty, high-stakes military adventure that captures the dangerous, cynical world of late-1970s soldier-of-fortune warfare. Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, the story follows Colonel Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton), a battle-hardened British mercenary hired by ruthless London merchant banker Sir Edward Matherson (Stewart Granger).

Matherson tasks Faulkner with recruiting a private military unit to execute a daring rescue mission in Central Africa: free Julius Limbani, a deposed democratic African president held captive by a dictatorial military regime.

Faulkner reassembles his trusted inner circle, including tactical strategist Rafer Janders (Richard Harris) and suave pilot Shawn Fynn (Roger Moore).

Together, they recruit a unit of fifty veteran mercenaries, including Pieter Coetzee (Hardy Krüger), a disillusioned South African soldier whose racial prejudices are challenged during the mission.

After rigorous training, the unit parachutes into the African jungle, successfully storming the remote prison compound and rescuing Limbani.

However, as they reach the airstrip for extraction, Matherson double-crosses the squad, striking a lucrative mining deal with the dictator and canceling the rescue plane.

Stranded deep in hostile territory, Faulkner and his dwindling squad must fight their way across hundreds of miles of brutal terrain, battling overwhelming enemy forces to bring President Limbani to safety and avenge Matherson’s deadly betrayal.
