Heart of Dixie captures a turbulent period of social awakening set in the American South during the dawn of the Civil Rights movement. Directed by Martin Davidson, the story centers on Maggie DeLoach (Ally Sheedy), a naive college student attending a prestigious, tradition-bound university in 1957 Alabama.

Maggie lives a comfortable, sheltered existence alongside her fun-loving sorority sisters, the glamorous Delia (Virginia Madsen) and the free-spirited Aiken (Phoebe Cates).

The trio enjoys the superficial trappings of campus life, from fraternity parties to southern cotillions, flanked by handsome, privileged suitors like Boots (Don Michael Paul) and Jenks (Peter Berg), who fully embody the region’s rigid social hierarchy and status quo.

Maggie’s tranquil world begins to shatter when she takes an assignment for the campus newspaper, bringing her into contact with Hoyt (Treat Williams), a cynical, progressive journalist from a major daily paper.

Hoyt introduces Maggie to the harsh realities of racial segregation and the growing violence directed at those daring to challenge it.

As Maggie witnesses firsthand the prejudice embedded within her own community and academic institution, she experiences a profound moral crisis.

Faced with intense hostility from her peers, fraternity members, and university officials who demand compliance, Maggie must find the courage to reject her upbringing, risk her social standing, and speak out against systemic injustice.

Sheedy delivers a poignant, heartfelt performance as Maggie, effectively conveying the quiet resolve and internal growth of a young woman finding her voice.

Madsen and Cates offer strong supporting turns that highlight the contrasting paths young women faced in the era, while Williams brings compelling grit to his role as a mentor.

Davidson directs with care, emphasizing emotional character moments alongside an evocative, period-accurate soundtrack.

Kyle Secor, Richard Bradford and Barbara Babcock round out the supporting cast.
