Mighty Joe Young (released in theaters on December 25, 1998) swings onto the screen as an exhilarating, deeply affectionate creature feature that breathes vibrant modern life into a classic Hollywood monster legend. Directed by Ron Underwood, the narrative begins in the remote mountains of Central Africa, where young Jill Young and a baby gorilla lose their respective mothers to a ruthless poacher named Andrei Strasser (Rade Šerbedžija).
Twelve years later, Jill (Charlize Theron) has raised the gorilla, named Joe, into a peaceful, gentle giant standing fifteen feet tall.
Their secluded sanctuary is discovered by Gregg O’Hara (Bill Paxton), an American wildlife conservationist who recognizes the immense threat poachers pose to the incredible creature.
Realizing Joe is no longer safe in the wild, Jill agrees to relocate him to a state-of-the-art wildlife preserve in California, managed by facility director Harry Baker (David Paymer) and dedicated veterinarian Dr. Cecily Banks (Regina King).
While Joe initially captivates the public and settles into his new home, disaster strikes when Strasser reemerges, seeking revenge and attempting to capture Joe for the black market.
After Strasser deliberately provokes Joe at a high-society gala, the enraged gorilla escapes into the streets of Los Angeles, causing widespread panic while ruthless investor Gareth (Peter Firth) calls for the animal’s destruction.
As Jill and Gregg race against time through the city to protect Joe from heavily armed police, they must stop Strasser before he can carry out his deadly revenge scheme, leading to a heroic climax at a burning carnival wheel.
Linda Purl, Richard Riehle, Verne Troyer, Tony Genaro, Tracey Walter, and Dina Merrill round out the supporting cast.
