The Hidden (released in theaters on October 30, 1987) opens with a sudden, violent crime spree across Los Angeles executed by Jack DeVries (Chris Mulkey), an ordinary citizen who suddenly transforms into a thrill-seeking, Ferrari-stealing murderer. After LAPD Detective Tom Beck (Michael Nouri) shoots DeVries in a brutal standoff, a strange, parasitic alien creature crawls out of the dying man’s mouth and transfers into his hospital roommate.

Peculiar FBI Special Agent Lloyd Gallagher (Kyle MacLachlan) arrives on the scene, insisting on partnering with a skeptical Beck to track the killer.

As the alien hops from body to body – possessing everything from a tough-guy Detective Cliff Willis (Ed O’Ross) to alluring exotic dancer Brenda Lee Van Buren (Claudia Christian) – Gallagher reveals his secret: he is an extraterrestrial lawman tracking the slug-like parasite, which murdered his own family on their home planet.

The plot races at a relentless pace as Beck and Gallagher pursue the body-snatching creature, which uses its hosts to indulge in heavy metal music, fast sports cars, and mass murder.

Department superiors like Lieutenant John Masterson (Clarence Felder) and Lieutenant Ed Flynn (Clu Gulager) struggle to comprehend the surreal violence sweeping the city.

Realizing the creature seeks ultimate political control, the partners track it to a high-profile press conference where the parasite possesses a prominent senator running for higher office.

In a explosive, high-stakes final confrontation, Beck is mortally wounded while helping Gallagher corner the alien, forcing Gallagher to use a specialized energy weapon to incinerate the monster once and for all before transferring his own life essence to save his dying friend.

Director Jack Sholder delivers a masterclass in hybrid genre filmmaking, blending gritty 1980s police procedural action with visceral science-fiction horror and sharp dark humor.

MacLachlan gives a brilliantly eccentric, quirky performance that prefigures his iconic television roles, perfectly complemented by Nouri’s grounded, cynical portrayal of a weary street detective.

Mulkey, O’Ross, and Christian deliver wildly energetic turns as the alien’s host bodies, while Gulager and Felder add solid character support throughout the chaotic pursuit.
