Running on Empty (released in theaters on September 9, 1988) stands as a deeply moving, emotionally resonant drama that explores the painful friction between parental loyalty and personal identity. Masterfully directed by Sidney Lumet from an Oscar-nominated screenplay by Naomi Foner, the story centers on the Pope family, who have lived on the run for over fifteen years.

Arthur (Judd Hirsch) and Annie (Christine Lahti) were radical anti-war activists in the 1970s who went underground after bombing a napalm laboratory, an act that accidentally blinded a security guard.

Since then, they have constantly uprooted their lives, changing identities, hair colors, and towns whenever the FBI closes in, dragging along their two sons, including musically gifted seventeen-year-old Danny (River Phoenix).

Settling in a quiet New Jersey suburb under new aliases, Danny attempts to blend in at high school while nurturing his passion for classical piano.

His exceptional talent catches the attention of his dedicated music teacher, Mr. Phillips, who recognizes Danny’s extraordinary potential and encourages him to audition for the Juilliard School in New York City.

However, applying to college requires birth certificates and background checks, which would instantly expose his family’s criminal fugitive status and force them to flee once again.

Complications multiply when Danny falls deeply in love with Lorna (Martha Plimpton), his music teacher’s insightful daughter, to whom he eventually confides his dangerous secret.

As his connection with Lorna deepens and Juilliard becomes a real possibility, Danny finds himself torn between his love for his family and his desire for a life of his own.

Supported by an empathetic contact (Lynne Thigpen) and Annie’s estranged father (Steven Hill), Arthur and Annie face an agonizing choice between protecting their freedom and letting their son step into the light.
