Jumpin’ Jack Flash (released in theaters on October 10, 1986) bursts onto the screen as an energetic, hilarious blend of Cold War espionage and fish-out-of-water comedy. Directed by Penny Marshall in her feature directorial debut, the narrative follows Terry Doolittle (Whoopi Goldberg), an eccentric, lonely computer terminal operator working at a major New York bank.
Terry passes her dull workdays chatting electronically with clients across the globe and spicing up her workspace with quirky personality.
Her mundane routine is suddenly derailed when a frantic encrypted message flashes across her computer screen from a stranded British MI6 operative code-named “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (Jonathan Pryce).
Trapped behind the Iron Curtain in Eastern Europe, Jack desperately needs Terry to crack a password and contact the British Consulate so intelligence handlers can orchestrate his extraction.
Reluctantly dragged into international intrigue, Terry finds herself navigating a deadly web of rogue operatives, high-tech hacking, and embassy cover-ups.
Guided only by cryptic clues and Rolling Stones song lyrics provided by Jack, Terry attempts to deliver the rescue password while maintaining her chaotic day job alongside eccentric coworkers, including a quirky colleague played by Carol Kane and a supportive friend played by Annie Potts.
Her amateur sleuthing draws the attention of ruthless agents and diplomats, including characters portrayed by Stephen Collins, John Wood, and Jeroen Krabbé.
From getting shot at in a runaway phone booth to crashing a high-society embassy party, Terry relies on her quick wit, sharp tongue, and sheer luck to dodge assassins.
As time runs out, Terry races across New York City to transmit the critical code, outsmart the mole within the consulate, and bring her mysterious digital soulmate safely home.
Sara Botsford, Vyto Ruginis, Peter Michael Goetz, Roscoe Lee Browne, Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Jim Belushi, Michael McKean and Tracey Ullman round out the supporting cast.
