Mitchell (released on September 10, 1975) bursts onto the screen as a rugged, quintessential mid-1970s police procedural that pits an unconventional, hard-nosed detective against wealthy criminals and rampant corruption. Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, the story follows John Mitchell (Joe Don Baker), a beer-swilling, short-tempered Los Angeles police detective who refuses to abide by department etiquette.

Despite constant reprimands from his frustrated superiors, Mitchell is assigned to investigate a suspicious burglary at the lavish home of James Cummings (Martin Balsam), a wealthy labor union attorney with deep ties to organized crime.

Suspecting that Cummings is involved in a massive heroin smuggling ring, Mitchell initiates an unrelenting, unauthorized stakeout of the lawyer’s estate.

His aggressive tactics quickly draw the ire of Walter Deaney (John Saxon), a powerful syndicate kingpin who controls the local drug trade alongside his towering, muscular enforcer Benton (Merlin Olsen).

As Mitchell relentlessly stalks Cummings and Deaney, he finds comfort in a burgeoning romance with Greta (Linda Evans), a warmhearted escort hired to distract him.

Undeterred by assassination attempts, car chases, and departmental suspension, Mitchell pushes forward with reckless abandon.

Dodging Benton’s lethal ambushes and unearthing betrayal within the legal system, the rogue detective engages in a violent, high-stakes final confrontation aboard a yacht, risking his life to bring down Deaney’s empire and see justice served.
