Company Business (released in theaters on September 6, 1991) glides onto the screen as a sharp, cynical buddy espionage comedy-thriller that captures the chaotic transition period at the close of the Cold War. Written and directed by Nicholas Meyer, the narrative centers on Sam Boyd (Gene Hackman), a disgraced, semi-retired CIA operative who has been relegated to corporate counter-espionage odd jobs.

Sam is unexpectedly reactivated by his ruthless handler, Elliot Jaffe (Kurtwood Smith), for a seemingly routine prisoner exchange in Berlin.

Sam’s assignment is to escort Pyotr Ivanovich Grushenko (Mikhail Baryshnikov), a sly KGB agent caught in America, and trade him for a captured U.S. pilot with two million dollars in suitcase cash facilitating the transaction.

The straightforward trade unravels in a Berlin subway station when corrupt elements within the CIA, led by calculating executive Pierce Dooley (Terry O’Quinn), attempt to double-cross both operatives and keep the cash for themselves.

Realizing they have been set up as disposable pawns by their respective governments, Sam and Pyotr form an uneasy alliance to survive.

They flee across Europe with the stolen million-dollar suitcase, pursued by ruthless CIA mercenaries, stiff German police officers and seasoned intelligence agents.

Navigating old spy safehouses and shifting allegiances from Berlin to Paris, the mismatched pair must pool their tradecraft and outsmart their superiors, turning a lethal government betrayal into an opportunity to pull off the ultimate heist and escape the espionage business for good.

Daniel von Bargen and Shane Rimmer round out the supporting cast.

Legacy

Company Business‘ legacy endures as a fascinating, witty time capsule marking the twilight of Cold War espionage cinema, widely appreciated for pairing Oscar winner Hackman with ballet superstar Baryshnikov.

The natural, banter-filled chemistry between Hackman’s weary, pragmatic veteran and Baryshnikov’s agile, charming operative gave the narrative genuine warmth alongside its cynical satire of government bureaucracy.

Meyer’s script cleverly parodied classic spy tropes while maintaining tight suspense and globe-trotting action. Supported by formidable character actors like Smith, O’Quinn, von Bargen, and Rimmer, Company Business remains a deeply cherished cult favorite among fans of 1990s action-comedies and lighthearted political thrillers.
