Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (released in theaters on July 26, 2019) transports audiences to a gorgeously sun-drenched, hyper-detailed recreation of 1969 Los Angeles at the twilight of cinema’s Golden Age. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the narrative follows Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), a fading, insecure television actor struggling to transition into the changing Hollywood landscape under the guidance of producer Marvin Schwarz (Al Pacino).

Navigating this career crisis alongside Rick is his fiercely loyal stunt double, driver, and best friend, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt).

As Rick lands guest-starring villain roles on Western shows alongside rising actors like James Stacy (Timothy Olyphant), his next-door neighbor is the radiant, up-and-coming actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), whose joyful innocence contrasts the creeping darkness building in the city’s underbelly.

The sprawling plot operates as an atmospheric hangout movie, weaving fictional struggles with real-world history across a shifting cultural landscape.

Cliff runs afoul of the sinister Manson Family cult at the dusty Spahn Ranch after giving a hitchhiker named Pussycat (Margaret Qualley) a ride, crossing paths with a blind George Spahn (Bruce Dern) and hostile cult members like Squeaky Fromme (Dakota Fanning).

Meanwhile, Sharon enjoys her burgeoning fame with friends like Jay Sebring (Emile Hirsch).

The tension mounts on a fateful August night when cult members including Tex (Austin Butler) and Sadie (Sydney Sweeney) target Rick’s house instead of Tate’s, leading to a shockingly violent, revisionist showdown involving a fiercely protective pit bull and a flame thrower, completely upending history to grant the era a fairy-tale ending.

Damian Lewis, Rebecca Gayheart, Clu Gulager, Clifton Collins Jr., Danielle Harris, Rumer Willis, Martin Kove, Zoë Bell, and Spencer Garrett round out the supporting cast.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood grossed $41.1 million on its opening weekend, marking Tarantino’s largest opening and finishing second at the box office.

The film would gross $393.9 million in its theatrical run.

Richard Roeper described the film as “a brilliant and sometimes outrageously fantastic mash-up of real-life events and characters with pure fiction” in his review and included the film as No.2 in his 2019 top-ten list.

Lasting Legacy

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood‘s legacy is immensely profound, celebrated as Tarantino’s deeply personal, nostalgic love letter to the industry that raised him.

Featuring a poignant, unforgettable final performance from Luke Perry alongside classic Tarantino veterans like Kurt Russell and Michael Madsen, the picture stands as a masterful exploration of aging, artistic anxiety, and historical grief.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood earned widespread critical acclaim and scored ten Academy Award nominations, culminating in Pitt’s first acting Oscar for his effortless, cool portrayal of Cliff Booth.

By boldly reshaping the tragic real-world trauma of the Manson murders into a redemptive, comforting piece of historical fiction, Tarantino created a towering milestone of modern cinema that beautifully captures the magic, transience, and enduring mythos of classic American filmmaking.
