Twister (released in theaters on May 10, 1996) opens with a terrifying prologue establishing the lifelong obsession of Dr. Jo Harding (Helen Hunt), a brilliant meteorologist driven to understand tornadoes after witnessing her father being swept away by an F5 storm as a child.

Decades later, Jo leads a ragtag, underfunded team of eccentric storm chasers across Oklahoma during a historic, record-breaking severe weather outbreak.

The narrative engine ignites when her estranged husband and former chasing partner, Bill “The Extreme” Miller (Bill Paxton), arrives with his straight-laced fiancée, Melissa (Jami Gertz), to get Jo to finally sign their divorce papers.

Bill has traded the thrill of the chase for a stable job as a television weatherman, but the raw pull of a massive, developing storm system quickly drags him right back into the driver’s seat of his old truck.

The plot revolves around the team’s race to deploy “Dorothy,” a revolutionary weather data-gathering device that Bill and Jo designed together.

To launch it, they must drive directly into the path of a tornado, a suicidal tactic made even more complicated by a corporate-sponsored rival chaser named Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes), who has stolen their blueprint.

Supported by a colorful ensemble of loyal teammates – including the manic, music-loving Dusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and the dependable Rabbit (Alan Ruck) – Bill and Jo navigate a series of escalating, multi-vortex encounters. The emotional stakes peak when a devastating twister levels the town of Wakita, trapping Jo’s beloved Aunt Meg (Lois Smith) inside her collapsed home.

This tragedy fuels a thrilling, high-octane climax as Bill and Jo pursue a massive, mile-wide F5 monster, forcing them to survive a chaotic gauntlet of flying cows, tumbling combines, and exploding fuel tankers to successfully deploy their technology and heal their fractured bond.

Directed by Jan de Bont and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the film balances relentless, pacing-heavy action with genuine human warmth.

Hunt gives a fiercely physical and empathetic performance, while Paxton shines as the reluctant hero rediscovering his true passion.

Hoffman steals every scene he is in, providing infectious, joyous energy that perfectly anchors the film’s lighter moments.
