Running Scared, released in theaters on June 27, 1986, is a high-octane, laugh-out-loud buddy-cop film that perfectly blends thrilling action with genuine comedic brilliance. Starring the dynamic duo of Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal, the movie is a joyous romp through Chicago’s criminal underworld, brimming with unforgettable banter and exhilarating set pieces.

The story centers on Ray Hughes (Hines) and Danny Costanzo (Crystal), two wisecracking, unconventional Chicago police detectives known for their reckless methods and uncanny ability to solve cases. After a particularly wild bust, they are forced into a mandatory vacation by their exasperated captain.

While soaking up the sun in Key West, they begin to consider retirement and opening a bar.

Their plans are abruptly interrupted when they learn that Julio Gonzales (Jimmy Smits), a ruthless drug lord in Chicago that was busted prior to their vacation, was released from jail and they vow to send him back to prison before their time on the force ends.

Hines delivers a charismatic and effortlessly cool performance as Ray Hughes, bringing his smooth charm and surprising comedic timing to the role.

Crystal is a comedic force of nature as Danny Costanzo, his rapid-fire wit, improvisational genius, and neurotic energy providing endless laughs. Their on-screen chemistry is absolutely electric, making them one of the most memorable buddy-cop duos in cinema history. Their banter and genuine affection for each other drive the heart of the film.

Smits is excellent as the menacing Julio Gonzales with his ambition to be the Spanish “Godfather” of Chicago, providing a formidable and surprisingly complex antagonist.

Dan Hedaya shines as their skeptical captain, adding to the film’s comedic friction.

Joe Pantoliano stands out as Snake, one of Gonzales’s associates.

Steven Bauer as Detective Frank LaRay, and Darlanne Fluegel as Anna Costanzo, contribute to the film’s gritty atmosphere and emotional stakes.

Director Peter Hyams orchestrates the action with a sleek visual style and a dynamic pace. The car chases are particularly impressive, feeling both thrilling and grounded, while the shootouts are intense and well-choreographed. The film expertly balances its comedic elements with genuine suspense, ensuring that the stakes always feel real, even amidst the laughter.

The screenplay, by Gary Devore and Jimmy Sangster, is sharp, witty, and perfectly tailored to the talents of its lead actors, allowing their personalities to shine through every line. The film’s use of its Chicago setting adds a gritty authenticity.
