Secret Admirer delivers a delightful dose of 80s teen romantic comedy, complete with the era’s signature blend of humor, heart, and youthful longing. Directed by David Greenwalt, the film weaves a tangled web of romance and mistaken identities that remains both entertaining and endearing.
C. Thomas Howell stars as Michael Ryan, the relatable and somewhat clueless protagonist whose anonymous love letter sets off a chain of hilarious misunderstandings.
Lori Loughlin shines as Toni Williams, the smart and charming girl next door who secretly pines for him. Their chemistry provides the film’s emotional core, balancing the comedic chaos with genuine heart.
Kelly Preston embodies the popular Deborah Ann Fimple, adding another layer to the romantic entanglements.
The supporting cast, including Fred Ward, Cliff DeYoung, Dee Wallace, and Leigh Taylor-Young, adds a farcical twist with their own romantic misinterpretations mirroring those of the teens.
Corey Haim also makes a memorable appearance as Michael’s younger brother.
Casey Siemaszko, Scott McGinnis and Courtney Gains round out the cast.
The original music score was composed by Jan Hammer, known for the theme for the popular NBC television series Miami Vice starring Don Johnson and Philip Micheal Thomas.

Reception for Secret Admirer
Secret Admirer grossed $2.4 million on its opening weekend, finishing No. 8 at the box office. The top film that week was Rambo: First Blood Part II ($9.2 million) starring Sylvester Stallone.
The film would gross $8.6 million prior to becoming a cult classic.
Janet Maslin, in her New York Times review, said of the film: “To be absolutely fair about it, Secret Admirer may have sounded marginally funny at the one-sentence-story-idea stage.”
Legacy
Secret Admirer‘s strength lies in its ability to capture the spirit of the 80s teen movie genre while offering a slightly more complex plot than usual. The film’s humor is derived from the snowballing misunderstandings, but it’s grounded by the genuine emotions of the characters.
