Bird on a Wire, released in theaters on May 18, 1990, is an action-comedy starring Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn that blends elements of romance, humor, and high-octane action, driven by the chemistry of its two charismatic leads.

Gibson plays Rick Jarmin, a man living under a witness protection program, who is forced to go on the run when his past catches up with him. Hawn portrays Marianne Graves, a successful lawyer who unwittingly re-encounters her former flame, Rick, after many years. Their on-screen chemistry is a highlight of the film, infusing both the comedic and romantic elements with a palpable energy.

David Carradine and Bill Duke play the primary antagonists, dangerous figures from Rick’s past who are intent on eliminating him.

Carradine brings his signature intensity, while Duke adds a menacing presence to their pursuit.

Stephen Tobolowsky and Joan Severance round out the supporting cast.

The film’s plot centers around Rick and Marianne’s frantic attempt to stay alive as they are pursued by these relentless foes. As they navigate a series of perilous situations, they’re forced to confront their past relationship and decide whether they have a future together.

The narrative is propulsive, prioritizing exciting chase sequences and close calls, with humor sprinkled throughout to lighten the mood.

Bird on a Wire is characterized by its fast-paced action sequences, which were a hallmark of director John Badham’s style. The film features a variety of thrilling stunts and set pieces, including car chases, motorcycle chases, and a memorable climax set in a zoo.
