Focus, released on Feb. 27, 2015, is a film that promises a stylish and seductive con artist thriller, boasting the undeniable charisma of Will Smith and the rising star power of Margot Robbie. While it delivers on the visual flair and some moments of genuine charm, the film ultimately falls short of its potential, leaving a slightly unsatisfying aftertaste.

Smith plays Nicky Spurgeon, a seasoned con artist who takes Jess Barrett (Robbie) under his wing. Their initial dynamic is electric, with both actors exuding a magnetic screen presence.

The film excels in its early stages, showcasing the intricate and often audacious cons that Nicky and his team pull off. These sequences are slick, fast-paced, and genuinely entertaining, drawing the audience into the world of high-stakes deception.

Robbie, even in her early career, demonstrates her star quality, holding her own against Smith. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, adding a layer of romantic tension to the con artist narrative. B.D. Wong delivers a solid performance in his supporting role.

However, as the film progresses, the plot becomes increasingly convoluted and predictable. The twists and turns, while intended to be surprising, often feel contrived and lack the necessary emotional weight. The focus shifts from the intricate cons to a more generic romantic drama, diluting the film’s initial appeal.

The film’s visual style is undeniably sleek and polished, capturing the glamorous world of high-end cons. The locations are luxurious, and the costumes are impeccable, creating a visually appealing experience. But the style ultimately overshadows the substance, leaving the audience with a sense of superficiality.

The central relationship between Nicky and Jess, while initially promising, ultimately feels underdeveloped. Their motivations become unclear, and their emotional connection lacks the depth necessary to make the romantic subplot truly engaging. The film struggles to balance the con artist narrative with the romantic elements, resulting in a somewhat disjointed experience.

Reception for Focus

Focus grossed $18.7 million on its opening weekend, finishing No. 1 at the box office.

The film would gross $159.2 million in its worldwide theatrical run.

Richard Roeper called Focus “sheer, escapist entertainment from start to finish” in his review.

Legacy

10 years later, Focus remains a visually appealing but ultimately forgettable film. It’s a testament to the charisma of its leads, but it’s also a reminder that even the most stylish productions need a strong narrative foundation. It’s a film that promises a lot but ultimately delivers a somewhat diluted version of its initial potential.
