Daylight tells the story of a New York City tunnel beneath the Hudson River that collapses after a series of explosions, trapping hundreds of people inside. Former New York City Emergency Medical Services Chief turned cab driver Kit Latura (Stallone), who must navigate the treacherous tunnels to rescue those trapped and find a way out before it’s too late after witnessing a blast that closed off the tunnel before entering through the ventilation system to help the survivors.

The film’s success can be attributed to its talented cast and gripping storyline. Stallone delivers a powerful performance as the heroic Larabee, while Amy Brenneman shines as a resourceful doctor caught in the chaos.

Reception for Daylight

Daylight opened at No. 2 at the box office with an opening gross of $10.0 million, trailing 101 Dalmations and ahead of such films as Star Trek: First Contact, Jingle All the Way and Ransom starring Mel Gibson.

The film would go o to gross $33.02 million in its theatrical run.

Roger Ebert said in his (2 out of 4 stars) review that “Daylight is the cinematic equivalent of a golden oldies station, where you never encounter anything you haven’t grown to love over the years.”

Legacy

Daylight has left a lasting impact on the disaster film genre. Its realistic portrayal of a catastrophic event and its focus on the human element have resonated with audiences for decades.
