Kiss of Death (released in theaters on April 21, 1995) introduces us to Jimmy Kilmartin (David Caruso), a reformed ex-con in Queens who is pulled back into the criminal underworld after a favor for his cousin goes south.

Following a botched heist and a stint in prison, Jimmy finds himself squeezed between a ruthless district attorney and the police, eventually agreeing to go undercover to protect his family.

His target is Little Junior Brown (Nicolas Cage), a volatile, asthmatic mob boss with a penchant for unpredictable violence and weightlifting.

As Jimmy navigates a treacherous landscape of double-crosses and hidden agendas, he must balance his survival instincts against the demands of Detective Calvin Hart (Samuel L. Jackson) and the cold ambitions of prosecutor Frank Zioli (Stanley Tucci).

The plot is a gritty, high-stakes game of manipulation where Jimmy’s only hope for a clean slate is to outsmart the very people who hold his life in their hands, leading to a tense showdown that tests the limits of his loyalty and nerve.

Caruso anchors the film with a restrained, soulful intensity that captures Jimmy’s desperation and quiet intelligence.

He is famously countered by Cage, who delivers a powerhouse, eccentric performance as Little Junior Brown, stealing every scene with a mix of menace and bizarre physical ticks.

Jackson provides a steady, authoritative presence as Detective Hart, while Helen Hunt and Kathryn Erbe bring a vital emotional weight to the domestic side of the story.

The film features an incredible roster of character actors, including a formidable Ving Rhames, and the legendary Philip Baker Hall.

With additional support from Michael Rapaport, Anthony Heald, Paul Calderon, Jay O. Sanders and Hope Davis, the movie feels densely populated with talent, making the criminal ecosystem of New York feel dangerous and authentic.

Reception for Kiss of Death

Kiss of Death grossed $5.3 million on its opening weekend, finishing third at the box office, trailing While You Were Sleeping ($9.3 million) and Bad Boys ($7 million on its third weekend).

The film would gross $14.9 million in its theatrical run.

Roger Ebert gave Kiss of Death two out of four stars in his review.

Legacy

Kiss of Death is defined by its status as a standout entry in the mid-nineties neo-noir revival, noted for its sharp script and atmospheric direction.

While it is often discussed in the context of Caruso’s transition from television to film, it has endured as a cult favorite primarily due to the legendary, unhinged performance by Cage, which remains a benchmark for his unique brand of screen presence.

The movie successfully modernized the 1947 classic of the same name starring Victor Mature, Brian Donlevy, and Richard Widmark, shifting the setting to the grimy, cynical world of the nineties while maintaining the core themes of betrayal and redemption.

It is celebrated by fans of the crime genre for its refusal to rely on simple action tropes, favoring psychological tension and complex character dynamics instead.

Kiss of Death stands as a testament to the era’s ability to produce gritty, star-studded procedurals that offered a sophisticated take on the traditional underworld narrative.
