Must Love Dogs (released in theaters on July 29, 2005) trots onto the screen as a warm, delightfully witty romantic comedy that humorously captures the chaotic world of early internet dating. Written and directed by Gary David Goldberg, the plot centers on Sarah Nolan (Diane Lane), a compassionate preschool teacher in her thirties who is struggling to move on after a painful divorce.

Exhausted by her lingering grief, Sarah’s well-meaning, overly intrusive family decides to take matters into their own hands.

Her sister Carol (Elizabeth Perkins) secretly creates an online dating profile for Sarah on “PerfectMatch.com,” attaching a crucial, non-negotiable caveat to her biography: “Must love dogs.”

This unexpected profile plunges Sarah into a series of awkward, hilarious blind dates.

Meanwhile, Jake Anderson (John Cusack), an idealistic boat builder nursing his own broken heart, is coaxed into online dating by his loyal friend Leo (Brad William Henke).

Jake and Sarah meet at a dog park – with borrowed pets in tow – and experience an immediate, quirky spark, though their budding romance is quickly complicated by poor timing and misunderstandings.

Matters get trickier when Sarah finds herself courted by Bob (Dermot Mulroney), a handsome, charming divorced father of one of her students.

As Sarah navigates this unexpected love triangle, she receives sage, loving romantic advice from her widowed father, Bill (Christopher Plummer), and her eccentric aunt Dolly (Stockard Channing), ultimately learning that taking a second chance on love requires embracing life’s unpredictable surprises.
