Iron Man 2 (released in theaters on May 7, 2010) picks up with the world now fully aware that billionaire Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the armored superhero.
While Stark revels in his celebrity status and restarts the Stark Expo, he secretly faces a double-edged sword: the palladium core in his chest arc reactor is slowly poisoning his blood, and the US government, led by Senator Stern (Garry Shandling), is demanding he hand over his technology.
The plot intensifies with the arrival of Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), a vengeful Russian physicist who constructs his own arc-powered whips to ruin the Stark legacy.
Vanko eventually teams up with Tony’s business rival, the fast-talking but inept Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), to create a lethal army of drones.
As Tony spirals into reckless behavior, he is reined in by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the mysterious new assistant Natalie Rushman, who is revealed to be S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).
Meanwhile, Tony’s friendship with James Rhodes (Don Cheadle, stepping into the role played by Terrence Howard in the original) is tested, leading Rhodes to don the “War Machine” armor.
Supporting turns from Gwyneth Paltrow as the increasingly capable Pepper Potts, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, and Leslie Bibb as reporter Christine Everhart provide continuity, while director Jon Favreau returns both behind the camera and in front of it as Happy Hogan.
Paul Bettany returns to voice Stark’s computer, J.A.R.V.I.S.
Olivia Munn, Kate Mara and John Slattery round out the cast.
The film culminates in a high-octane battle at the Expo, where Stark and Rhodes must combine their firepower to stop Vanko’s drone army.
The film followed Iron Man (2008) and was followed by Iron Man 3 (2013).

Legacy
The legacy of Iron Man 2 is its foundational role in world-building, as it shifted the franchise from a standalone success into a sprawling, interconnected universe.
It is the film that truly introduced S.H.I.E.L.D. as a major geopolitical force and gave audiences their first taste of the ensemble chemistry that would define the Avengers.
By debuting Black Widow and formalizing the War Machine mantle, it expanded the roster of heroes while establishing the “Easter egg” culture that fans now expect from every Marvel release.
Though it faced criticism at the time for prioritizing future setup over a singular narrative, it has been vindicated by history as a crucial bridge that proved the viability of a long-form cinematic narrative.
Iron Man 2 remains a stylish, tech-heavy spectacle that deepened Tony Stark’s character, exploring his mortality and father issues, while cementing the MCU’s signature blend of snarky humor and blockbuster action.
