Firstborn (released in theaters on October 26, 1984) begins with the quiet, domestic life of Wendy Livingstone, a divorced mother played by Teri Garr, and her two sons, Jake and Brian.

The plot shifts dramatically when Wendy begins a relationship with Sam, a smooth-talking but increasingly volatile drifter portrayed with a menacing edge by Peter Weller.

While Wendy is blinded by her desire for companionship, Jake (Christopher Collet) quickly senses that something is wrong.

As Sam moves into their home, his influence turns toxic; he is a low-level drug dealer who brings violence and instability into their suburban sanctuary.

Jake, acting as the protective “firstborn,” must navigate the pressures of high school life, including his relationship with his girlfriend Lisa (Sarah Jessica Parker) and his friendship with Lee (Robert Downey Jr.), while simultaneously mounting a desperate defense against Sam’s escalating aggression.

Corey Haim, in one of his earliest roles, plays the younger brother Brian, whose safety becomes the primary catalyst for Jake’s eventual stand against the man destroying his family.

Directed by Michael Apted, the film eschews the typical gloss of 1980s teen cinema in favor of a raw, kitchen-sink realism.

Collet delivers a grounded performance as a young man forced into premature adulthood, while Garr captures the heartbreaking vulnerability of a woman losing her grip on her household.

The tension is amplified by Weller’s performance, which transitions from charismatic to terrifying with a cold, calculated precision.

The film’s climax is not a stylized action sequence but a harrowing domestic confrontation that emphasizes the high stakes of a broken home and the courage required to mend it.

Legacy

Firstborn‘s legacy is most famously tied to its incredible ensemble of future Hollywood legends as it served as a vital launching pad for the careers of Weller, Downey Jr., Parker, and Haim, offering a rare glimpse of their raw talent before they became household names.

Beyond its casting pedigree, the film is remembered for its unflinching look at the “stranger danger” that can exist within one’s own walls and the realistic portrayal of the burdens placed on the children of divorce.

Firstborn remains a poignant, often overlooked gem of the decade that balanced the anxieties of the era with a timeless story about the transition from adolescence to protector.
