My Chauffeur – Nostalgic Ride Through 80s Low-Brow Comedy

My Chauffeur, released in theaters on January 24, 1986, coasts by on the infectious energy of its lead, Deborah Foreman (Valley Girl), delivering a quintessential, if slightly messy, piece of cinematic fluff from the era. The plot centers on Casey Meadows (Foreman), a spirited and quirky young woman who is hired as the first and only female chauffeur at the hyper-masculine, Brentwood Limousine Service.

The company is presided over by the demanding Mr. Witherspoon (E.G. Marshall) and  managed by the gruff McBride (Howard Hesseman).

Casey’s arrival is met with immediate skepticism and outright hostility from her male colleagues, who are certain she won’t last a week.

Determined to prove her worth, Casey navigates a series of increasingly chaotic and humorous fares.

Her assignments range from chauffeuring eccentric, high-maintenance clients to getting mixed up in wild bachelorette parties and surprising side jobs.

Casey is also assigned to transport Battle Witherspoon (Sam J. Jones), the son of the owner of the limousine company for what turns out to be a love-hate relationship.

The core conflict—a woman trying to succeed in a man’s world—is largely played for laughs, utilizing the culture clash for situational comedy.

My Chauffeur was written and directed by David Beaird (Pass the Ammo and It Takes Two).

Reception for My Chauffeur

My Chauffeur grossed $3.6 million on its opening weekend, finishing third at the box office.

The film would gross $4.8 million in its theatrical run.

Legacy

My Chauffeur‘s legacy lies in its revival as a cult favorite, enjoyed primarily by audiences seeking 80s nostalgia. The movie is a perfect example of the decade’s B-movie formula, blending slapstick, mild social commentary, and light romance into an energetic, unpolished package.

For fans of Foreman, it showcases her trademark spunky, resilient heroine and it remains a goofy, essential footnote in 80s comedy, appreciated today for its simple, harmless fun.
