Speed 2: Cruise Control, released in theaters on June 13, 1997, takes the high-concept tension of its predecessor and transports it to the open seas, delivering a grand-scale spectacle filled with daring stunts, a compelling villain, and a thrilling aquatic setting. The film offers a unique blend of suspense and over-the-top action, creating a distinct, high-stakes adventure.

The story follows Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock), still prone to attracting chaos, as she embarks on a romantic Caribbean cruise with her new boyfriend, Alex Shaw (Jason Patric), an LAPD SWAT officer.

Their relaxing vacation turns into a nightmare when the luxurious Seabourn Legend cruise ship is hijacked by John Geiger (Willem Dafoe), a brilliant but deranged computer genius and former employee of the ship’s parent company. Geiger, seeking revenge for being fired due to his terminal illness, has programmed the ship to collide with an oil tanker, planning to steal diamonds from the ship’s vault during the resulting panic.

Annie and Alex must now navigate the massive, out-of-control vessel, disarm the bomb, and protect the passengers, all while facing Geiger’s escalating traps and the terrifying inevitability of collision.

Bullock reprises her role as Annie Porter with her signature blend of relatable vulnerability, quick thinking, and a charming sense of humor. She grounds the film amidst the escalating chaos.

Patric is a strong addition as Alex Shaw, portraying a capable and determined action hero who matches Annie’s resilience. Their developing relationship provides a central emotional anchor.

Dafoe delivers a chillingly effective performance as John Geiger, making him a memorable and unsettling villain. His cold, methodical approach to destruction and his unsettling personal ticks create a truly sinister antagonist.

Bo Svenson, Lois Chiles and Colleen Camp also contribute to the ensemble, adding to the various passenger dynamics and moments of comedic relief.

Joe Morton makes an uncredited cameo, reprising his role as Lieutenant Herb ‘Mac’ McMahon from Speed.

Director Jan de Bont, returning from the first Speed, brings his expertise in large-scale action sequences to the high seas. The film impressively utilizes its cruise ship setting, making the massive vessel a character in itself, which becomes increasingly dangerous as it barrels out of control. The practical effects, including the climactic ship collision and its destructive aftermath, are genuinely spectacular and contribute to the film’s grand scale.

The screenplay, by Randall McCormick and Jeff Nathanson, is crafted to constantly introduce new obstacles and escalate the peril, ensuring a non-stop barrage of tension and thrills. The unique setting and the relentless pursuit make for an exhilarating ride.
