The Counselor (released in theaters on October 25, 2013) plunges viewers into a bleak, philosophical, and violently unforgiving underworld where a single compromise leads to total ruin. Directed by Ridley Scott from an original screenplay by celebrated novelist Cormac McCarthy, the story follows a suave, unnamed El Paso attorney known only as “The Counselor” (Michael Fassbender).

Tempted by greed and eager to secure a lavish lifestyle for his sweet, unsuspecting fiancée Laura (Penélope Cruz), he decides to invest in a massive $20 million cocaine shipment from Mexico.

He ignores explicit, chilling warnings about the cartels from his flashy business partner Reiner (Javier Bardem) and Reiner’s sociopathic, leopard-print-clad girlfriend Malkina (Cameron Diaz), as well as a cynical, cowboy-hatted middleman named Westray (Brad Pitt).

The Counselor’s smooth transaction turns into an absolute nightmare through a cruel twist of fate: a courier carrying stolen drug money is decapitated by a cartel trap, and because the Counselor had previously helped a prison inmate (Rosie Perez) post bail for her son – who happens to be the dead courier – the syndicate suspects the Counselor of orchestrating the theft.

The cartel retaliates with swift, indiscriminate brutality, targeting everyone associated with the deal.

As Westray flees for his life and Reiner meets a grisly end, the Counselor frantically appeals to high-level connections like cartel insider Jefe (Rubén Blades), only to be met with cold, philosophical lectures about choices and unavoidable consequences.

Meanwhile, shadowy figures like Randy (John Leguizamo) and a the Buyer (Dean Norris) move through the periphery of a collapsing web.

The Counselor is forced to watch his life, love, and world disintegrate completely as the predatory Malkina maneuvers to claim the entire haul for herself.

Reception for The Counselor

The Counselor grossed $7.8 million on its opening weekend, finishing fourth at the box office.

The film would gross $71 million worldwide.

Richard Roeper gave The Counselor four out of four stars in his review.

Legacy

The Counselor‘s legacy endures as one of the most polarizing, fiercely debated neo-noir crime thrillers of the 21st century, renowned for its uncompromising existential dread and razor-sharp dialogue.

Scott’s sleek, sun-drenched visual direction perfectly complemented McCarthy’s bleak literary vision, anchoring a stellar ensemble cast.

The film is dedicated to Ridley Scott’s brother, Tony Scott, who died in 2012.

Initially misunderstood by mainstream audiences, The Counselor has undergone a significant critical reappraisal among film scholars, retro crime fans, and McCarthy devotees who revere its unapologetic brutality and dark philosophical depth.
