The Hunting Party (released in theaters on September 7, 2007) charges onto the screen as a darkly satirical, suspenseful political thriller that exposes the absurdities and dangers of post-war journalism in the Balkans. Directed by Richard Shepard and inspired by a true story, the narrative follows Simon Hunt (Richard Gere), a disgraced former star news correspondent who hit rock bottom after an emotional breakdown on live television during the Bosnian War.

Years later, Simon returns to Sarajevo and tracks down his loyal former cameraman, Duck (Terrence Howard), who has achieved career stability alongside a green, eager network executive’s son, Benjamin (Jesse Eisenberg).

Simon convinces Duck and Benjamin to join him on a rogue scoop: locating the most wanted fugitive war criminal in Bosnia, a ruthless villain known as “The Fox” (Ljubomir Kerekeš), who carries a five-million-dollar bounty.

Armed with vague leads, the trio ventures deep into hostile territory, posing as a covert CIA strike team to gather information from local contacts, including a enigmatic local woman named Mirjana (Diane Kruger).

However, their flimsy cover story works entirely too well.

Local warlords, corrupt officials, and a secretive UN operative (Dylan Baker) mistake the journalists for actual assassin intelligence agents, triggering a dangerous chain reaction.

Trapped in a escalating web of mercenary crossfire and bureaucratic cover-ups, the trio must rely on pure nerve, luck, and street smarts to survive while attempting to accomplish what the UN and NATO failed to do for a decade: bring a elusive war criminal to justice.

Reception for The Hunting Party

The Hunting Party grossed $7.6 million in its theatrical run.

The Hunting Party had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2007.

Legacy

The Hunting Party‘s legacy endures as a sharp, highly underrated entry in late-2000s political cinema, widely celebrated for its daring tone that seamlessly balances genuine suspense with razor-sharp black humor.

Gere delivered one of his most charismatic and manic late-career performances as the cynical Simon Hunt, anchored by excellent comedic chemistry with Howard and an early standout performance from Eisenberg.

Richard Shepard’s dynamic direction, coupled with striking location shooting, offered a uniquely biting critique of international peacekeeping failures while maintaining the energy of a high-stakes buddy adventure.

Supported by memorable turns from Kruger and Baker, the film remains a deeply appreciated cult thriller among fans of geopolitical satires and journalism-focused cinema.

The working title for this film was Spring Break in Bosnia before being changed to The Hunting Party during post-production.
