Wilder Napalm, directed by Glenn Gordon Caron, is a quirky and often strange romantic comedy with a supernatural twist. The film stars Dennis Quaid as Wallace, a pyrotechnic fire-eater who works at a carnival and has a complicated past with his pyrotechnic rival and long-lost brother, Wilder (Arliss Howard).
The two brothers, who have the ability to start fires with their minds, are caught in a love triangle with the beautiful and quirky Vida (Debra Winger), a woman who has a mysterious past.
The film follows the brothers as they compete for Vida’s affection, using their powers for showmanship and sabotage. Their rivalry, fueled by a lifelong competition and jealousy, comes to a head in a final, fiery showdown.
Wilder Napalm is a surreal, comedic, and sometimes dark journey into the world of an unusual love triangle and its strength lies in the eccentric performances of its lead actors.
Quaid is great as the charming but flawed Wallace, and Howard is excellent as the more intense and brooding Wilder.
Winger is a perfect fit for the role of Vida, a free spirit who is attracted to both men.
The chemistry between the three leads is a major part of the film’s appeal.
M. Emmet Walsh also stars as the fire chief.
The film’s unique premise and offbeat humor make it stand out from a lot of other romantic comedies of its era.
Vince Gilligan, best known as the creator, primary writer and executive producer popular crime drama series Breaking Bad, its spin-off prequel series Better Call Saul and the Apple TV+ series Pluribus, wrote the screenplay for Wilder Napalm.
