The Good Old Boys (premiered on March 5, 1995 on TNT) rides onto the screen as a richly atmospheric, nostalgic Western drama that captures the fading glory of the American frontier at the dawn of the twentieth century. Marking the feature directorial debut of Tommy Lee Jones, who also adapted Elmer Kelton’s acclaimed novel, the story centers on Hewey Calloway (Jones), an aging, free-spirited West Texas cowboy who resists the encroachment of modern civilization and automobiles.

Living a carefree, nomadic life, Hewey returns to his hometown of West Texas around 1906 to visit his hard-working brother, Walter (Terry Kinney), Walter’s grounded wife, Eve (Frances McDormand), and their impressionable young sons, including Cotton (Matt Damon). Upon his arrival, Hewey discovers that Walter’s small family farm is under severe threat of foreclosure by a ruthless banker.

Determined to help his brother save the family homestead, Hewey reluctantly agrees to settle down temporarily and put his cattle-herding skills to work.

Along the way, he reconnects with his old drifting partner, Snort Yarnell (Sam Shepard), and finds himself unexpectedly charmed by Spring Renfro (Sissy Spacek), a dedicated local schoolteacher who envisions a quiet, settled future for him.

However, as the march of progress accelerates with telephone lines and modern machinery, Hewey faces pressure from wealthy local figures like banker C.C. Tarpley (Wilford Brimley) and the City Marshal (Bruce McGill).

Caught in an agonizing tug-of-war between his deep affection for Spring, his devotion to Walter’s family, and his unyielding desire for open-range freedom, Hewey must decide whether to embrace the changing modern world or ride off into the shrinking horizon as one of the last true cowboys.
