Patriot Games, released in theaters on June 5, 1992, is a taut, intelligent, and relentlessly suspenseful adaptation of Tom Clancy’s best-selling novel. The film delivers a powerful narrative of a family caught in the crosshairs of international terrorism, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

The story sees former CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) on vacation in London with his wife Cathy (Anne Archer) and daughter Sally.

While observing a public appearance by Lord William Holmes (James Fox), Ryan inadvertently foils a terrorist attack by a rogue faction of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). In doing so, he kills one of the attackers, Sean Miller’s (Sean Bean) younger brother.

This act plunges Ryan and his family into a deadly personal vendetta, as Miller, now a fanatical and vengeful terrorist, escapes from custody and relentlessly hunts the Ryans, bringing the fight directly to their doorstep in the United States. Jack is forced to use his dormant intelligence skills to protect his family and stop Miller before it’s too late.

Ford seamlessly steps into the role of Jack Ryan, portraying the character with a grounded sense of integrity, intelligence, and a palpable protective instinct for his family. He makes Ryan a relatable hero thrust into extraordinary danger.

Archer is excellent as Cathy Ryan, conveying both vulnerability and resilience as she faces unthinkable threats.

James Earl Jones returns as Admiral Greer, providing gravitas and a familiar anchor for the Clancy universe.

Thora Birch shines as Sally Ryan, the daughter of Jack and Cathy Ryan.

Patrick Bergin delivers a chilling performance as Kevin O’Donnell, Miller’s cold and calculating accomplice.

Bean is truly menacing as the vengeful Sean Miller, making him a terrifying and relentless antagonist.

Richard Harris brings a weighty presence as Paddy O’Neil, adding depth to the political complexities.

Samuel L. Jackson also stars as Ryan’s Naval Academy associate, Lt. Commander Robby Jackson.

Phillip Noyce directs with a keen eye for suspense, building tension meticulously through smart plotting and impactful action sequences. The film excels in portraying the insidious nature of terrorism and the devastating personal cost it exacts.

The screenplay, by W. Peter Iliff and Donald Stewart, is intelligent and well-paced, effectively adapting the dense source material while maintaining a relentless forward momentum. The action is visceral and realistic, emphasizing the stakes for the Ryan family. The film masterfully blends the elements of a domestic thriller with high-stakes international espionage, creating a compelling and gripping narrative.

Alec Baldwin was in negotiations to reprise his role as Jack Ryan from The Hunt for Red October, but committed to perform in A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway.

Patriot Games would be followed by Clear and Present Danger in 1994.
