One Night Stand (released in theaters on November 14, 1997) unfolds as a brooding, emotionally complex romantic drama that explores fidelity, destiny, and the lasting consequences of a chance encounter. Directed by Mike Figgis, who heavily overhauled an original screenplay by Joe Eszterhas, the story follows Max Carlyle (Wesley Snipes), a successful commercial director living in Los Angeles with his loving wife, Mimi (Ming-Na Wen), and two children.

During a business trip to New York City to visit his vibrant best friend Charlie (Robert Downey Jr.), who is dying of AIDS-related complications, Max suffers a series of bizarre travel delays.

Late at night, he crosses paths with Karen (Nastassja Kinski), a thoughtful cellist married to an accountant named Vernon (Kyle MacLachlan).

A shared cab ride and a series of coincidences lead Max and Karen to spend an intensely intimate night together in a hotel room.

Returning home to Los Angeles the next morning, a guilt-ridden Max tries to bury the encounter and recommit to his family, keeping the secret hidden from Mimi.

One year later, Max and Mimi fly back to New York to be at Charlie’s bedside during his final days.

Fate intervenes when Max discovers that Charlie’s brother is Vernon – who arrives at the hospital alongside his wife, Karen.

Reunited in the tragic shadows of Charlie’s deteriorating health, Max and Karen are forced to confront their lingering passion while attempting to maintain appearances in front of their respective spouses.

As Charlie’s passing brings emotional clarity to everyone involved, secret betrayals and marital dissatisfactions bubble to the surface, culminating in a poignant, unexpected realignment of love, grief, and honesty for both couples.

Amanda Donohoe, Glenn Plummer, Thomas Haden Church, Julian Sands, John Ratzenberger, and Xander Berkeley round out the supporting cast.

Legacy

One Night Stand‘s legacy endures as a sophisticated, jazz-infused entry in late-1990s adult relationship dramas, widely recognized for earning Snipes the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival.

Snipes delivered a subtle, emotionally nuanced performance that demonstrated his incredible range beyond action cinema, paired with a poignant, unforgettable supporting turn by Downey Jr.

Figgis’s atmospheric direction and moody musical score elevated the material far beyond classic erotic thriller tropes, bolstered by compelling performances from Kinski, Wen, and MacLachlan.

One Night Stand remains a stylish, thought-provoking examination of love and human connection.
