Man of the House, released in theaters on Feb. 25, 2005, remains a charming and underrated comedy that blends action, humor, and heart. While it might not be a cinematic masterpiece, it offers a genuinely enjoyable experience, thanks in large part to Tommy Lee Jones’s gruff charm and the surprisingly strong chemistry between the cast.

Jones shines as Texas Ranger Roland Sharp, a no-nonsense lawman whose life is turned upside down when he’s assigned to protect a group of cheerleaders who witnessed a murder. His initial reluctance to babysit a group of teenage girls quickly gives way to a begrudging respect and even affection as he becomes an unlikely father figure. Jones perfectly captures the character’s gruff exterior and the soft heart that lies beneath.

Kelli Garner, Christina Milian, Paula Garces, Monica Keena, and Vanessa Ferlito star as the University of Texas Cheerleaders that witnessed the murder. They bring energy and personality to their roles, creating a believable and relatable group of friends. Their interactions with Jones are often hilarious, as the straight-laced Ranger tries to navigate the world of college girls while they attempt to help him with the women in his life; most notably his teenage daughter Emma (Shannon Woodward) and one of the cheerleader’s professors to whom he is attracted.

Anne Archer provides a grounded presence as a UT professor and Sharp’s love interest.

Cedric the Entertainer adds comedic flair as Sharp’s partner, offering a welcome dose of humor.

R. Lee Ermey’s brief appearance as Sharp’s boss adds a touch of his signature gruffness.

Brian Van Holt, Shea Whigham (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Curtis Armstrong round out the cast.
