Mike Nichols’s dramedy Heartburn, released in theaters on July 25, 1986, offers a bittersweet and often humorous look at the complexities of marriage, infidelity, and the messy reality of love. Based on Nora Ephron‘s semi-autobiographical novel, the film is a witty and poignant exploration of a relationship’s rise and fall, anchored by the powerhouse performances of its two leads.

The story centers on Rachel Samstat (Meryl Streep), a successful New York food writer, and Mark Forman (Jack Nicholson), a charming and charismatic Washington D.C. political columnist. They meet at a wedding, fall madly in love, and quickly marry, despite Rachel’s initial reservations about Mark’s reputation as a womanizer.

Their whirlwind romance leads to a move to Washington, the purchase of a dilapidated house they lovingly renovate, and the birth of their first child. Life seems idyllic, filled with witty banter, culinary delights, and the joys of new parenthood.

However, Rachel’s world is shattered when she discovers that Mark is having an affair while she is pregnant with their second child. This revelation sends Rachel into a tailspin of anger, confusion, and despair. She grapples with the betrayal, the public humiliation, and the agonizing decision of whether to fight for her marriage or leave.

As Rachel tries to navigate this emotional turmoil, she leans on her supportive friends, including Julie Siegel (Stockard Channing), and her colleagues.

The film features a strong ensemble cast that adds depth and humor to the narrative, including Jeff Daniels as Richard, Steven Hill as Harry Samstat, Catherine O’Hara as Betty, Kevin Spacey in a small but memorable role as a subway thief, Mercedes Ruehl as Eve, Miloš Forman as Dmitri, Richard Masur as Arthur, and Maureen Stapleton as Vera.

The narrative follows Rachel’s attempts to cope with the infidelity, her brief return to New York, and the eventual confrontation with Mark.

The song Coming Around Again was written and performed by Carly Simon, and became one of her biggest hits, reaching No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Legacy

Heartburn‘s legacy lies in its sharp, intelligent script by Ephron, which perfectly captures the nuances of a crumbling marriage with both humor and heartbreak.

It’s particularly celebrated for the magnetic chemistry and individual brilliance of Streep and Nicholson, who bring immense depth and complexity to their roles. While not a conventional romantic comedy, it offers a realistic and relatable portrayal of love’s imperfections.

Heartburn remains a poignant and often funny examination of trust, betrayal, and the resilience required to rebuild a life after heartbreak, solidifying its place as a smart, character-driven dramedy that continues to resonate with audiences.
