Dave, released in theaters on May 7, 1993, is a delightful and heartwarming comedy directed by Ivan Reitman. The film stars Kevin Kline in a dual role as both the President of the United States, Bill Mitchell, and his charming look-alike, Dave Kovic.
The premise is both clever and captivating: Dave Kovic, a kind-hearted temp agency owner, is called upon to impersonate the President. When the real President becomes incapacitated, Dave is thrust into the role full-time. The film explores how an ordinary man navigates the complexities of political power, bringing his own brand of decency and common sense to the White House.
Kline delivers a fantastic performance, showcasing his versatility by creating two distinct and memorable characters.
Sigourney Weaver shines as First Lady Ellen Mitchell, who initially views Dave with suspicion but gradually develops respect and affection for him.
Frank Langella stands out as the manipulative White House Chief of Staff Bob Alexander, who has aspirations of becoming the President himself.
Charles Grodin provides laughs as Dave’s accountant friend Murray.
Oscar winner Ben Kingsley stars as Vice President Gary Nance, who is sent on a goodwill tour of Africa while being embroiled in a savings and loan scandal in an attempt to have him resign.
There are also standout supporting performances from Kevin Dunn, Ving Rhames, and a young Laura Linney.
Numerous cameos in the film include Arnold Schwarzenneger, Oliver Stone, Jay Leno, Ben Stein, Larry King, former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill, Sen. Chris Dodd, Sen. Tom Harkin, Chris Matthews and Kathleen Sullivan.

Roger Ebert gave the film three and a half out of four stars in his review, saying “The movie is more proof that it isn’t what you do, it’s how you do it: Ivan Reitman’s direction and Gary Ross’ screenplay use intelligence and warmhearted sentiment to make Dave into wonderful lighthearted entertainment.”
The Hollywood Reporter‘s Duane Byrge said “Serious moviegoers will be swayed by its many Being There-like similarities as Kline’s engaging personality and good-natured beatitudes are a perfect bromide for the nation’s ills.”
