The Rocketeer (released in theaters on June 21, 1991) sweeps audiences away to a stylized, sun-drenched 1938 Los Angeles, centering on Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell), a brilliant but down-on-his-luck racing pilot whose beloved plane is destroyed during a chaotic tarmac pursuit between the police and a gang of ruthless mobsters.

In the aftermath of the crash, Cliff and his wise, eccentric mechanic mentor, Peevy Peabody (Alan Arkin), discover a hidden, high-tech package stowed away in their hangar by the fleeing criminals.

Inside is a top-secret, hand-held rocket pack capable of personal human flight, which was recently stolen from visionary billionaire Howard Hughes (Terry O’Quinn).

Peevy crafts a sleek, aerodynamic golden fin helmet to steer the contraption, and Cliff takes to the skies, instantly transforming into a mysterious, masked aerial hero dubbed by the media as the Rocketeer, while trying to patch up a rocky romance with his beautiful, aspiring actress girlfriend, Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly).

The plot intensifies as Cliff’s spectacular public rescues inadvertently draw the crosshairs of several dangerous factions who are desperate to reclaim the invaluable prototype.

Unbeknownst to Cliff, the local mob outfit led by the sophisticated gangster Eddie Valentine (Paul Sorvino) was hired to steal the device by Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton), a dashing, intensely popular Hollywood swashbuckler who secretly harbors a treacherous double identity.

Sinclair uses his suave charm to romance Jenny, hoping to discover the flying ace’s true identity.

The military and government agencies soon get involved, deployed by stern federal authorities like Agent Fitch (Ed Lauter) to hunt down the device before it falls into the wrong hands.

The narrative reaches a spectacular, high-altitude climax at the Griffith Observatory and aboard a massive, drifting Nazi zeppelin, forcing Cliff to unite with unexpected allies to thwart a international espionage plot and rescue Jenny before the airship explodes.

Director Joe Johnston brings an incredible sense of earnest warmth and visual polish to the screen, masterfully capturing the romanticism of aviation’s golden age with beautiful practical effects and rich art deco production design.

Campbell gives a wonderfully charming, wide-eyed performance that makes Cliff an incredibly relatable hero, while Connelly provides a remarkably sharp, independent emotional center.

Dalton shines brightly, chewing the scenery with a delightfully villainous vanity, and Arkin grounds the wild adventure with his signature deadpan comedic timing.

James Handy, Jon Polito, Margo Martindale, Clint Howard, Melora Hardin and Rick Overton round out the cast.

Legacy

The Rocketeer‘s legacy rests on its status as a fiercely beloved, masterfully orchestrated cult classic that beautifully championed a sincere, retro-pulp superhero aesthetic long before the genre dominated modern multiplexes.

Highly praised by contemporary film historians for James Horner’s sweeping, majestic orchestral score, the film serves as a brilliant blueprint for classical, earnest blockbuster filmmaking that prioritizes character warmth over cynical irony.

Its timeless visual identity, striking costume design, and meticulous recreation of classic Hollywood continue to influence modern adventure directors.

The Rocketeer is celebrated as a perfect, comforting slice of cinematic escapism, proving that old-fashioned heroism never goes out of style.
