Keeping the Faith (released in theaters on April 14, 2000) explores the complicated intersection of lifelong friendship, religious devotion, and unexpected romance in the heart of New York City. The story follows Brian Finn (Edward Norton) and Jake Schram (Ben Stiller), two best friends who have grown up to become a Catholic priest and a Reform rabbi, respectively.

Known as the “God Squad” for their modern and energetic approach to their ministries, their lives are upended when their childhood friend, Anna Riley (Jenna Elfman), returns to town as a high-powered corporate consultant.

Both men quickly realize they are falling in love with her, creating a profound crisis of identity and faith.

Brian must grapple with his vows of celibacy and the loneliness of his calling, while Jake faces intense pressure from his congregation and his mother to marry a Jewish woman.

The narrative balances the slapstick humor of their competing affections with a thoughtful examination of how tradition and modern love can coexist in an increasingly secular world.

Stiller and Norton exhibit a genuine, lived-in chemistry as Jake and Brian, capturing the competitive yet deeply loyal bond between the two men. Stiller brings his signature neurosis to the role of the rabbi, while Norton, who also directed the film, provides a soulful and contemplative counterpoint as the priest.

Elfman is radiant as Anna, serving as a believable catalyst for their internal turmoil and bringing a sharp, independent energy to the trio.

The film is further enriched by a legendary supporting cast, including Eli Wallach as a wise older rabbi and Anne Bancroft as Jake’s formidable mother.

The inclusion of acclaimed director Miloš Forman in a rare acting role as Brian’s mentor adds an extra layer of gravitas and wit to the film’s ecclesiastical world.

Ron Rifkin also appears as Larry Friedman.

The legacy of Keeping the Faith is its enduring reputation as one of the most intelligent and good-hearted romantic comedies of the early 2000s.

It is frequently praised for its respectful and nuanced portrayal of religious life, avoiding easy caricatures in favor of exploring the very human struggles of those who choose a spiritual path.
