15 Minutes (released in theaters on March 9, 2001), directed by John Herzfeld, is a jagged, cynical thriller that arrived at the dawn of the reality television explosion. Taking its title from Andy Warhol’s famous “15 Minutes” prophecy regarding fleeting fame, the film serves as a scathing critique of the American media’s obsession with sensationalism and the legal system’s vulnerability to “theatrical” defenses.

15 Minutes is a movie that feels increasingly prophetic in an era of viral content, depicting a New York City where the camera is as lethal a weapon as the gun.

The story follows Eddie Flemming (Robert De Niro), a high-profile, celebrity homicide detective who understands that in modern policing, image is everything. To solve a gruesome double homicide, he is paired with the low-key, fire-investigation specialist Jordy Warsaw (Edward Burns).

Their targets are two Eastern European criminals, Emil Slovak (Karel Roden) and Oleg Razgul (Oleg Taktarov), who have realized that America’s legal system favors those who can manipulate public perception.

Emil and Oleg begin a spree of violence across the city, filming their crimes with a handheld camera.

Their goal is to sell the footage to Robert Hawkins (Kelsey Grammer), the unscrupulous host of the tabloid show Top Story, and then plead insanity caused by the very media that broadcasts them.

As the investigation widens, involving a brave young witness (Vera Farmiga) and a streetwise teen (Anton Yelchin), Flemming and Warsaw find themselves in a race against time.

The tension is heightened by the presence of Flemming’s superior (Avery Brooks), who must balance the political fallout of a city gripped by televised terror.

15 Minutes‘ plot culminates in a shocking act of violence that forces the audience to question their own complicity in the cycle of “fame-seeking” bloodshed.

Kim Cattrall, Darius McCrary, Paul Herman, James Handy and David Alan Grier round out the supporting cast.

Charlize Theron makes an uncredited appearance as Rose Hearn.

Reception for 15 Minutes

15 Minutes grossed $10.5 million on its opening weekend, finishing second at the box office.

The film would gross $56.4 million worldwide.

Roger Ebert gave 15 Minutes three out of four stars in his review.

Legacy

15 Minutes’ legacy lies in its aggressive, meta-commentary on the intersection of crime and entertainment and while it was polarized by critics upon its release for its graphic violence, it has aged into a fascinating precursor to films like Nightcrawler.

It accurately predicted a world where criminals would document their own atrocities for “clout” and where the line between news and snuff-entertainment would become dangerously thin.

15 Minutes is also remembered for its subversive use of De Niro, playing against his typical “tough guy” tropes by making him a victim of the very media machine he helped build.

Furthermore, it provided early, haunting glimpses of the talent of the late Anton Yelchin and established Roden as one of the most chillingly modern villains of the early 2000s.
