Sommersby (released in theaters on February 5, 1993) opens in the bitter, impoverished aftermath of the American Civil War, focusing on the small, struggling farming community of Vine Hill, Tennessee.

Laurel Sommersby (Jodie Foster) has managed to maintain her family’s tobacco plantation alone for six years, quietly relieved by the presumed death of her cruel, abusive husband, Jack.

Her peaceful existence and her blossoming relationship with a local suitor, Orin Meecham (Bill Pullman), are abruptly upended when Jack Sommersby (Richard Gere) suddenly returns home.

To Laurel’s absolute shock, this man is fundamentally changed; instead of the violent, selfish tyrant who went off to war, this new Jack is literate, deeply affectionate, hardworking, and fiercely dedicated to restoring the town’s ruined economy.

The plot evolves into a sweeping social and romantic epic as Jack convinces the skeptical, destitute townsfolk – including respected elders played by Clarice Taylor and Frankie Faison – to pool their resources to cultivate a lucrative, premium crop of tobacco.

While Jack’s modern, progressive ideas and fair treatment of Black laborers earn him deep respect, they also draw the intense, jealous ire of Orin and a group of bitter white supremacists (led by R. Lee Ermey).

Suspicion reaches a boiling point when Jack is suddenly arrested for a murder committed before the war.

The narrative transforms into a gripping courtroom battle presided over by a sharp, dignified judge (James Earl Jones).

Laurel is faced with an agonizing dilemma: to save her new husband’s life, she must prove he is an impostor, but doing so would strip the town of its legal land deeds and brand the man she has truly come to love a fraud, leading to a devastatingly emotional climax.

Director Jon Amiel delivers a sumptuously photographed, emotionally rich melodrama that successfully adapts the classic French historical film The Return of Martin Guerre.

Gere gives one of the finest, most nuanced performances of his career, radiating an enigmatic charm, while Foster provides a fiercely intelligent, luminous performance that anchors the film’s complex moral landscape.

Legacy

The legacy of Sommersby lies in its rare status as a highly successful Hollywood remake that matches, and arguably expands upon, the emotional weight of its source material.

It remains a definitive touchstone for nineties romantic cinema, celebrated for its mature, complex exploration of identity, redemption, and the transformative power of love.

By setting the narrative during the American Reconstruction era, the movie provided a unique, thought-provoking look at social change and racial cooperation in the post-war South.

Sommersby stands as a beautifully crafted, lasting monument to the golden age of studio period dramas, remembered for its soaring musical score, its striking visual poetry, and its hauntingly tragic conclusion.
