American Outlaws, released in theaters on August 17, 2001, is a Western film that attempts to retell the origin story of the legendary outlaw Jesse James. The film begins at the end of the Civil War, when Jesse James (Colin Farrell) and his fellow gang members—including Frank James (Gabriel Macht), Cole Younger (Scott Caan), and Bob Younger (Eric Lively)—return to their rural Missouri home.
They are shocked to discover that a powerful railroad baron, Thaddeus Rains (Harris Yulin), and his cold-blooded henchman, Allan Pinkerton (Timothy Dalton), are using violence and intimidation to steal land from the local farmers, including their own families.
When the law fails to provide justice, Jesse and his friends take matters into their own hands, robbing banks and trains to fight back against the ruthless railroad company.
This turns them into folk heroes, but also fugitives from the law.
American Outlaws is filled with a dynamic cast, including Ali Larter as Jesse’s love interest, Zee Mimms, and notable supporting roles from Kathy Bates, Terry O’Quinn and Ronny Cox.
The film is a fast-paced and action-packed ride, with plenty of thrilling chase scenes and shootouts.

It’s a film that, despite its flaws, is an enjoyable and lighthearted adventure that introduced the story of Jesse James to a new generation.
