Used Cars, released in 1980, is a raucous, no-holds-barred comedy that takes a cynical yet uproarious look at the cutthroat world of car sales. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg, this film is a masterclass in chaotic humor, rapid-fire dialogue, and outrageous schemes, making it a cult classic for its unique brand of over-the-top satire.
The film centers on Rudy Russo (Kurt Russell), a charismatic and ambitious used car salesman who dreams of a career in politics. He works for Luke Fuchs (Jack Warden), a kind-hearted but struggling car lot owner. Luke’s brother, Roy L. Fuchs (Warden in a dual role), owns the rival lot across the street and is constantly trying to put Luke out of business. When Luke unexpectedly dies, Rudy and his eccentric colleagues decide to cover up his death to prevent Roy from seizing the lot. This leads to an escalating series of increasingly absurd and illegal tactics to sell cars, outwit Roy, and keep their dealership afloat, culminating in a massive, televised car sale stunt.
Russell delivers a fantastic performance as Rudy Russo. He perfectly embodies the slick, fast-talking salesman with a surprising moral compass (albeit one that bends considerably under pressure). Russell’s comedic timing and his ability to navigate the film’s escalating madness make him an incredibly engaging protagonist.
Warden is brilliant in his dual role as the saintly Luke and the villainous, conniving Roy L. Fuchs. His contrasting portrayals are a comedic highlight, showcasing his versatility and providing the central conflict of the film.
Deborah Harmon plays Barbara Jane Fuchs, Luke’s daughter, who becomes entangled in Rudy’s schemes and brings a touch of grounded reality to the absurdity.
Frank McRae provides a gruff but loyal presence as Jim, one of the mechanics.
Gerrit Graham is hilariously over-the-top as Jeff, a paranoid salesman.
Michael McKean, David L. Lander, Joe Flaherty, Wendie Jo Sperber, Dub Taylor, Michael Talbott and Alfonso Arau round out the cast.
