Road House is an unapologetically entertaining action film that has garnered a cult following since being released in theaters on May 19, 1989. Directed by Rowdy Herrington and produced by Joel Silver, the film delivers a thrilling blend of martial arts, brawling, and 80s action movie excess.
Patrick Swayze stars as Dalton, a philosophical “cooler” (a professional bar bouncer) with a mysterious past, hired to clean up the rowdy Double Deuce bar in Jasper, Missouri. Swayze’s charisma and martial arts prowess are on full display, making him an incredibly compelling and watchable action hero. He effortlessly balances a sense of calm and control with explosive fighting skills.
Kelly Lynch provides a strong romantic interest as Dr. Elizabeth Clay, while Sam Elliott adds gravitas and a touch of Western flair as Wade Garrett, Dalton’s mentor and friend. Their presence elevates the film beyond simple action fare.
Ben Gazzara plays the villainous Brad Wesley with relish. Wesley is a corrupt businessman who terrorizes the town, and Gazzara’s performance is both menacing and memorable.
Marshal Teague as Jimmy, Wesley’s main henchman, is a formidable and acrobatic adversary for Dalton.
Kevin Tighe as Frank Tilghman, the owner of the Double Deuce, provides a character the audience can root for as he tries to save his business.
Red West adds authenticity to the small town persona of the film as the owner of a local auto parts store and the uncle of Dr. Clay.
