Tony Scott’s Revenge,released on President’s Day weekend in 1990, has endured as a cult classic, admired for its stylish visuals, gritty atmosphere, and unforgettable performances.

The film, starring Kevin Costner, Madeleine Stowe, and Anthony Quinn, tells the story of Jay Cochran (Costner), a retired Navy aviator who embarks on a bloody quest for revenge after his affair with the wife of powerful Mexican drug lord Tiburon Mendez(Quinn) goes horribly wrong.

The film is based on a novella written by Jim Harrison, published in Esquire magazine in 1979. Harrison also co-wrote the script for the film with Jeffrey Alan Fiskin.

A Visual Feast

Tony Scott‘s signature visual style is on full display in Revenge. From the sweeping aerial shots of the Mexican landscape to the close-up shots of violence, the film is a visually stunning experience. Scott masterfully utilizes slow-motion, vibrant colors, and dynamic camera movements to create a mesmerizing and often unsettling atmosphere.

Scott’s Director’s Cut of Revenge was released. The film was actually shorter by 20 minutes, running 104 minutes, and including expanded scenes as well as some deletions.

A Cast of Strong Performances

Costner delivers a powerful performance as the disillusioned hero seeking redemption. Stowe is captivating as Miryea, a beautiful woman trapped in a loveless marriage.

Quinn, in one of his final roles, delivers a chilling portrayal of the ruthless drug lord.

Miguel Ferrer, Sally Kirkland, James Gammon, Joe Santos and John Leguizamo round out the cast.

Reception for Revenge

Revenge opened with $6.1 million and placing third behind Driving Miss Daisy starring Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy and Hard to Kill starring Steven Seagal.

Revenge would gross $15.6 million in its domestic theatrical run and $26.6 million worldwide.

Roger Ebert rated it 2.5 out of 4 stars in his review, saying the film “plays like a showdown between its style and its story.”

Quentin Tarantino has famously said that Revenge is one of his favorite Tony Scott films.
