True Colors (released on March 15, 1991) dives headfirst into the ruthless, morally compromised corridors of Washington politics with a sharply acted exploration of ambition, betrayal, and broken ideals. The story follows two law school roommates at the University of Virginia whose starkly different worldviews shape their rapid ascents toward power.

Tim Garrity (James Spader) is an earnest, principled young idealist who genuinely desires to serve the public good, while Peter Burton (John Cusack) is a charming, hyper-ambitious striver from a working-class background willing to manipulate, deceive, and exploit every connection to reach the top.

Despite their contrasting moral compasses, the two form a close friendship that is severely tested as they transition from law school into the political arena.

Peter sets his sights on congressional power, worming his way into the inner circle of a powerful veteran senator, James Stiles (Richard Widmark), and his formidable wife (Dina Merrill).

To cement his position, Peter courts Senator Stiles’s daughter, Diana (Imogen Stubbs), stealing her affection away from Tim, who had initially harbored feelings for her.

Meanwhile, Tim accepts a position as an investigator at the Department of Justice under a sharp, relentless mentor, John Palmeri (Mandy Patinkin).

As Peter’s political star rises through ruthless backroom dealing, insider trading, and smear tactics, Tim’s corruption investigation inadvertently places his best friend directly in his crosshairs.

Realizing that Peter has systematically exploited their friendship, seduced the woman he loved, and compromised his own integrity for a congressional seat, Tim faces a agonizing choice between personal loyalty and upholding the law.

The inevitable confrontation forces both men to reveal their true motivations in a high-stakes showdown of political self-preservation.

Philip Bosco, Paul Guilfoyle, and Don McManus round out the supporting cast.

Legacy

True Colors‘ legacy endures as a compelling, highly atmospheric time capsule of early-1990s political drama, celebrated for pairing two of the era’s finest young actors in electrifying roles.

Cusack delivered an exceptionally charismatic, chillingly persuasive performance as the amoral climber, matched by Spader’s layered portrayal of wounded idealism.

Director Herbert Ross brought veteran polish and narrative tension to Kevin Wade’s sharp screenplay, supported by outstanding character work from Widmark, Patinkin, Stubbs, and Merrill.

Political thriller fans value True Colors as an engaging, prescient critique of political ambition and compromised ethics.
