Top Gun grossed $8.2 million on its opening weekend, finishing No. 1 at the box office.
The film would remain in the top 10 at the box office for the next 25 weeks, dropping to 11th on Nov. 7-9.
With a domestic gross of $176.8 million, Top Gun was the highest grossing film of 1986, far outpacing the second highest grossing film, Crocodile Dundee ($116.8 million) starring Paul Hogan.
Top Gun would eventually gross $357.3 million in its worldwide theatrical run.
Gene Siskel gave the film three out of four stars in his review, saying “the picture works on the gut-grabbing, roller coaster level.”
