The Woman in Red, released in theaters on August 15, 1984, a romantic comedy directed by and starring Gene Wilder, is a whimsical look at middle-aged infatuation and the hilarious chaos that ensues.

The film centers on Teddy Pierce (Wilder), a successful but discontented man whose life is turned upside down when he sees a gorgeous woman in a flowing red dress (Kelly LeBrock) standing over an air vent, in an iconic scene that evokes Marilyn Monroe. This singular image becomes an all-consuming obsession, driving Teddy to fantasize about meeting her and escape his seemingly perfect but boring life with his wife, Didi (Judith Ivey).

With the bumbling support of his friends (Charles Grodin, Joseph Bologna), Teddy embarks on a series of increasingly frantic and comically disastrous attempts to meet the mysterious woman.

His misadventures are complicated by a blind date with the eccentric and lonely Miss Milner (Gilda Radner), a character who provides some of the film’s funniest moments.

Michael Zorek, as Teddy’s son, also witnesses his father’s mid-life crisis antics, adding to the embarrassment.

Thom Matthews also has an early role as Erik.

As Teddy’s web of lies and failed schemes grows, the film explores themes of desire, temptation, and the perceived excitement of a life not lived.

Wilder, in his signature style, is a master of physical comedy and subtle emotional vulnerability, making Teddy’s plight both relatable and riotously funny.

LeBrock is a stunning presence who perfectly embodies the idealized figure of his obsession.

The ensemble cast, including the inimitable Grodin and the scene-stealing Radner, elevate the film with their sharp comedic timing.

The film is a charming period piece that, while rooted in the 80s, still holds up as a classic comedy.

While not the first film to receive a PG-13 rating, The Woman in Red was among the earliest to include brief frontal nudity.

Reception for The Woman in Red

The Woman in Red grossed $3.2 million on its opening weekend, finishing No. 7 at the box office.

The film would gross $25.3 million in its theatrical run.

Legacy

The Woman in Red stands as a testament to Wilder’s comedic talent, but its most enduring cultural mark is its soundtrack, primarily featuring the Oscar-winning song “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” written and performed by Stevie Wonder.

The song’s massive success cemented the film’s place in popular culture, making the movie instantly recognizable even to those who have never seen it.

It’s a delightful, if slightly dated, film that captures the innocent, comedic spirit of its era.
