The Crush, released on April 2, 1993, is a psychological thriller that taps into the anxieties of infatuation and obsession, particularly through the lens of a young teenager. While it’s become something of a cult classic, it’s also a film that elicits mixed reactions.

Alicia Silverstone, in her pre-“Clueless” days, plays Adrian Forrester, a 14-year-old who develops a dangerous obsession with Nick Eliot (Cary Elwes), an older journalist renting her parents’ guest house.

Silverstone delivers a performance that, while at times veering into melodrama, effectively captures the unsettling intensity of a youthful crush turned toxic.

Elwes (Liar Liar) plays the somewhat hapless Nick. He portrays the character as a man caught off guard by Adrian’s escalating behavior, but some might find his reactions a bit passive, which can be frustrating.

Jennifer Rubin, as Nick’s girlfriend Amy, provides a necessary counterpoint, but her role is somewhat limited.

Kurtwood Smith, as Adrian’s father, brings a sense of authority, though even he seems unable to fully grasp the extent of his daughter’s obsession.

The film’s strength lies in its ability to create a palpable sense of unease. The tension builds gradually as Adrian’s infatuation morphs into a campaign of manipulation and revenge. The lush setting of the Forrester’s affluent home adds to the unsettling atmosphere, contrasting the idyllic surroundings with the dark undercurrents of Adrian’s behavior.

However, The Crush also suffers from some narrative inconsistencies and moments of over-the-top melodrama. Some of the plot points stretch credibility, and the film’s climax, while intended to be shocking, can feel a bit contrived.

The film would gross $13.6 million in its theatrical run.

Legacy

The Crush is a flawed but compelling thriller that explores the darker side of infatuation. Silverstone’s performance is memorable, and the film’s ability to generate suspense is undeniable. While it may not be a masterpiece, it’s a solid entry in the early 90s thriller genre, and it offers a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked obsession.
