Smile, Jenny, You’re Dead, the 1974 made-for-television thriller, is a forgotten gem that showcases a solid performance from its lead and a chillingly effective plot. The film stars the ever-reliable David Janssen as Harry Orwell, a former San Diego police detective turned private investigator.

The story begins when Harry is hired by his ex-girlfriend’s friend to find a missing fashion model, Jenny. As he delves into the Los Angeles fashion world, he quickly discovers a sinister truth: the disappearance is connected to a series of murders, and a killer is systematically targeting models.

The plot unfolds with a quiet intensity, as Harry navigates a world of high-stakes glamour and seedy backrooms. He is assisted by an unlikely source: a young, street-smart teen named Robin (Jodie Foster in one of her early roles). The film’s strength lies in its procedural approach, with Harry meticulously piecing together the clues while being pursued by the elusive killer.

Zalman King, who plays photographer Roy St. John, would gain notoriety in directing with films including Wild Orchid, Red Shoe Diaries, and Two Moon Junction. King also was a producer with credits including 9 1/2 Weeks and Lake Consequence.

The supporting cast, including John Anderson and Clu Gulager, provides a solid foundation for the mystery.

Unlike many thrillers of its time, Smile, Jenny, You’re Dead relies on suspense and character-driven tension rather than excessive action.

The film served as the pilot for the popular television series Harry O that ran for 45 episodes over two seasons.

Legacy for Smile Jenny, You’re Dead

The film’s legacy is significant as a testament to the high quality of made-for-TV movies in the ’70s. It is particularly notable for its early showcasing of Foster’s talent, who brings a refreshing naturalism to her role.

Janssen’s portrayal of Harry Orwell is a highlight, cementing the character as a low-key, world-weary detective archetype that would influence future crime dramas. While it may not be as widely remembered as other films of its era, Smile, Jenny, You’re Dead remains a compelling and well-crafted mystery that holds up as a tense and suspenseful watch for fans of the genre.
